South Lyon Community Update: October 14-24, 2026

Fall is in full swing in South Lyon! Since moving to the area, I love keeping up with what's happening around town and sharing it with my neighbors (and future neighbors). Here's what's coming up.

Events

South Lyon Farmers & Artisans Market, Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The downtown market runs through the end of October, so there's still time to grab local produce and handmade gifts. It's set up near Liberty and Lafayette, with backup spots ready during construction, so watch for signs.

Salem-South Lyon District Library (9800 Pontiac Trail) has some fun fall programs for grown-ups:

  • Spooky Halloween Bottles (Adult Craft Night), Thursday, Oct. 15, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Decoupage a spooky bottle for your Halloween decor. Registration required.
  • Palm Reading with Kristy Robinett, Wednesday, Oct. 21, 6:30 to 8 p.m. Registration required.

Goodies on the Grand & Holy Hallways, Saturday, Oct. 17, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Just up the road in New Hudson, the Lyon Township DDA hosts this free, family-friendly Halloween event at Inspiration Park (56730 Grand River Ave.), with trick-or-treating, games, music, and a kids' costume contest.

News

Lafayette Park is coming to downtown. The DDA, the City, and community partners are creating a new green gathering space at McHattie Street and Pontiac Trail, funded by grants from Oakland County Parks and the Main Street Oakland County ARPA program. I love seeing this kind of investment downtown!

Early voting starts soon. Early voting sites open statewide on Saturday, Oct. 24, and stay open daily through Sunday, Nov. 1, ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. Visit Michigan.gov/Vote to check your registration and find your site.

Road & Construction Updates

Pontiac Trail/Lafayette Street (9 Mile to north of 10 Mile). The Road Commission for Oakland County's approximately $11 million reconstruction and drainage project is still underway:

  • Northbound Pontiac Trail remains closed from 9 Mile Road to the CSX tracks north of 10 Mile. Southbound stays mostly open. The northbound detour is 9 Mile to Griswold to 10 Mile to Martindale to 11 Mile.
  • The west half of 10 Mile Road at Pontiac Trail has been closed since Sept. 21 and is expected to stay closed through late October.
  • There's no on-street parking in the work zone, but downtown businesses are open. Please keep shopping local!
  • RCOC expects the project to be substantially complete and open to traffic by Nov. 15.

9 Mile Road in Lyon Township is closed east of Addison Boulevard to Briar Meadow Drive for gravel road paving, with completion projected for late October. The detour is Griswold to 10 Mile to Currie.

School Happenings

South Lyon Community Schools:

  • Oct. 20-22: Elementary family-teacher conferences (held on two of the three evenings). Elementary students have half days (a.m. only) on Tuesday, Oct. 20 and Thursday, Oct. 22.
  • Nov. 3: No school for students.

Go Mustangs! As a Millennium Middle School mom, I'm cheering on our athletes at these home events: cross country vs. Centennial on Friday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m., the girls' volleyball LVC Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon, and volleyball vs. Smart MS on Monday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m.
